A Note from the Board

Lights on Avon is an initiative of Avon Community Recreational Neighborhood, Inc. (ACORN) which is a community non-profit organization dedicated to investing in resources to enhance recreation in Avon.

Our current project is raising funds to install lights on the new all-purpose turf field under construction at Avon High School. (Our last project was funding the lights at the Avon Middle School tennis courts.)

Without lights, the AHS field will never be fully used or appreciated or enjoyed. No Friday night football and marching bands; no senior night field hockey or soccer games; no evening youth sports practices; no walks around the track after dinner. Although the plan all along has been to light the field – it is being fully fitted for lights as approved by the town-wide referendum – lights are expensive, and they were not included in the approved building project.

Our capital campaign has been long in the planning and was launched in August 2019.

The Town Council generously kicked it off with an effective contribution of $70,000 to install the concrete stanchions (footings) for the lights when the field. These were installed in the fall of 2019.

Similarly, the Board of Education pledged $30,000 toward the completion of the fundraising campaign.

The town's contribution and the Board of Education's pledge, coupled with $140,000 in cash donations as of March, 2020, set us in good stead to fully fund the project.

And then came COVID-19. Respectful of the financial and emotional strain the pandemic has put on families, we suspended our campaign in April 2020.

We are exploring new ways to meet our fundraising goal and remain committed to turning Lights On Avon. Thank you for your support!
